China Coast Guard vessel collides with Philippine fisheries boat in South China Sea
A maritime collision occurred in the South China Sea on September 18, 2026, involving a China Coast Guard vessel and a Philippine government fisheries boat, the BRP Datu Magat Salamat. The incident took place approximately 54 nautical miles off the coast of Palawan near Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands.
The Philippine Coast Guard reported that the Chinese vessel, CCG-21585, first performed a close maneuver passing within 10 meters of the Philippine boat at 11:04 a.m. Nine minutes later, the Chinese vessel struck the starboard side of the BRP Datu Magat Salamat. The Philippine vessel was on a mission to deliver subsidized fuel to local fishermen. The collision caused damage to the ship's railings, metal support structures, and deck equipment, though no injuries were reported.
China disputed the Philippine account, asserting that the Philippine vessel was responsible for the collision. Chinese officials stated that the Philippine ship ignored repeated warnings, changed course, and accelerated into the path of the Chinese vessel. Beijing characterized the actions of the Philippine side as provocative and maintained that its own coast guard acted professionally.
