China conducts military drills near disputed Scarborough Shoal
The Chinese People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command has conducted joint naval and air military exercises near Scarborough Shoal, a territory disputed with the Philippines. China refers to the area as Huangyan Dao, while the Philippines calls it Panatag Shoal.
In an official statement, the Chinese military described the drills as a necessary response to actions by certain countries that have undermined regional peace and stability. The exercises were intended to strengthen combat capabilities and safeguard China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
The South China Sea remains a flashpoint for regional tension, with China claiming nearly 80 percent of the waters based on its 1947 map. Other nations, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei, also maintain overlapping claims in the resource-rich area. Tensions have escalated recently following increased maritime friction and a firmer stance from the Philippine government under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
