China launches naval and air drills around Scarborough Shoal
China’s People’s Liberation Army and Coast Guard carried out joint naval and air combat drills around the disputed Scarborough Shoal (called Huangyan Dao by Beijing and Bajo de Masinloc by the Philippines) in the South China Sea. The exercises were described as a necessary action to test and improve combat readiness, defend China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, and respond to actions of “certain countries” that the PLA said undermine regional peace and stability. At the same time, China announced new regulations for the Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve that ban unauthorised fishing, mining, coral and giant‑clam extraction, with violators facing legal accountability. In a related move, the PLAAF deployed JL‑10 twin‑seat advanced trainer aircraft to patrol the area, citing lower operating costs and suitability for loitering missions. The drills occur amid ongoing tensions with the Philippines, which also claims the shoal; the Philippine embassy in Beijing did not immediately comment on the activities.
