China conducts naval drills near Scarborough Shoal, raising South China Sea tensions

China carried out naval and air patrols and joint drills around the disputed Scarborough Shoal (Panatag/Huangyan Island) in early August, following a series of water‑cannon incidents and a near‑collision with Philippine vessels. The operations brought Chinese coast‑guard and military assets within a few metres of Philippine fishing boats, tightening the operating picture for Manila and increasing the risk of accidental escalation.

The moves come as the United States, the Philippines and Japan concluded a five‑day maritime exercise in the South China Sea, underscoring the strategic importance of the area for regional security and trade. Beijing said the drills, which included search‑and‑seizure and forced‑towing scenarios, were “necessary” to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, and it also released new rules for managing a nature‑reserve zone around the shoal.
