China deploys 12,000-ton coast guard cutter near Malaysia and Brunei

China’s largest coast guard vessel, CCG 5901—nicknamed ‘The Monster’—has conducted an extended patrol within the exclusive economic zones of Malaysia and Brunei. Tracking data from the maritime transparency initiative SeaLight indicates the 12,000-ton vessel has been at sea for approximately four weeks, concentrating its operations near Sarawak state and the resource-rich Luconia Shoals.

The vessel’s presence involves repetitive, slow-speed looping maneuvers, which analysts suggest are characteristic of grey-zone operations intended to demonstrate endurance, monitor other vessels, and signal presence in contested waters. The area around Luconia Shoals remains a significant point of friction due to its proximity to offshore energy infrastructure and resources.
