China maritime operations in South China Sea

Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated through various maritime confrontations and extended patrols by the China Coast Guard (CCG).

In the vicinity of Ren'ai Jiao, the CCG accused Philippine personnel from the vessel LT-57 of aggressive behavior, claiming that two rubber boats rammed a CCG patrol boat and that officers were struck with oars and poles. The CCG reported that it exercised restraint through verbal warnings and vessel maneuvers while conducting law enforcement operations in the Nansha Qundao region.

Furthering its presence in contested waters, China has deployed its largest coast guard vessel, CCG 5901, nicknamed ‘The Monster’, for an extended patrol. The 12,000-ton cutter has spent approximately four weeks conducting repetitive, slow-speed looping maneuvers within the exclusive economic zones of Malaysia and Brunei, specifically concentrating near Sarawak state and the Luconia Shoals. Analysts describe these actions as characteristic of grey-zone operations intended to monitor other vessels and signal presence near offshore energy infrastructure.
