China deploys hospital ship to provide free medical care in Africa

China's People's Liberation Army Navy hospital ship, the Auspicious Ark, has arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, for a seven-day mission to provide free medical treatment and professional exchanges. This visit marks the first time a Chinese naval hospital ship has docked in Côte d’Ivoire and is part of the Mission Harmony-2026 humanitarian initiative.

Prior to reaching Côte d’Ivoire, the vessel visited Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea. In Mauritania, medical teams conducted over 7,500 consultations and 30 surgical operations; in Senegal, they performed 6,060 consultations and 29 operations; and in Guinea, they treated more than 4,000 patients. In Djibouti, the ship provided medical support to Chinese personnel stationed at a local military base.

This deployment occurs as the United States pursues healthcare partnerships through the America First Global Health Strategy, which involves bilateral agreements where African governments increase domestic healthcare spending in exchange for American funding to combat diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.
