China economy shows K-shaped growth with tech boom amid broader slowdown

China is experiencing a divergent economic performance characterized by a K-shaped pattern. While the technology sector, particularly new energy vehicles and artificial intelligence, shows robust growth, the broader domestic economy faces significant headwinds.

Data from July indicates a slowdown in industrial production, which grew by 4.5%, and retail sales, which rose only 0.6%. Fixed-asset investment fell by 6.7% in the first seven months, and the real estate sector continues to struggle, with investment plunging 19.2% year-on-year. The urban unemployment rate has climbed to 5.2%.

Despite these challenges, the first half of the year saw a 4.7% GDP increase, supported by a 5.3% rise in service retail sales. The new energy vehicle market reached a record high in July, with a retail penetration rate of 65.1%. Economists note that the gap between high-tech manufacturing and weak domestic consumption may impact global trade as supply potentially outpaces demand.
