China establishes joint military training facility in Laos
China has established a joint support and training facility with Laos at Ban Keun Airport near Vientiane. According to an announcement from Beijing’s Ministry of National Defense, the facility is intended to enhance practical military cooperation and train Laotian air force pilots to promote regional peace and stability.
Satellite imagery reveals significant infrastructure at the site, including a 2,000-meter-long runway, a taxiway, and a parking apron capable of accommodating 22 aircraft. Reports indicate rapid construction activity and the presence of approximately eight aircraft, identified as likely Chinese-Pakistani Hongdu JL-8 (K-8) training and light attack jets, along with more than two dozen support vehicles.
This development marks the first overseas military facility that China has openly acknowledged, distinguishing it from previous operations in Djibouti and Cambodia. Observers note that the base expands China’s military footprint in Southeast Asia, shifting regional strategic dynamics from a primarily maritime focus to include increased aerial capabilities and logistical access.
