China Evergrande founder Hui Ka Yan sentenced to life in prison

Hui Ka Yan, the founder of China Evergrande Group and former Asia’s wealthiest individual, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. The sentencing follows convictions for crimes including financial fraud, illegal fundraising, and bribery committed between 2016 and 2021. The court also ordered the confiscation of all of Hui’s personal property and levied fines of approximately 8.82 billion yuan against Evergrande Group, with an additional 7 billion yuan in penalties against its subsidiary, Hengda Real Estate.

In total, 56 individuals connected to Evergrande, including senior executives, received prison sentences ranging from 22 months to 18 years. The company’s 2021 default on roughly $300 billion in liabilities triggered a broader crisis in China’s property sector that has lasted six years.

The sector’s decline continues to impact the Chinese economy, characterized by falling land sales, declining home prices in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, and a contraction in real estate investment. This downturn has slowed domestic consumption and forced a greater reliance on exports, contributing to increased trade tensions with the European Union and the United States.
