Evergrande founder sentenced for financial fraud
Overview
The Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court has sentenced Evergrande founder Hui Ka Yan (also known as Xu Jiayin) to life imprisonment following investigations into large-scale financial fraud. Between 2016 and 2021, the company engaged in activities including inflating assets, concealing liabilities, illegal absorption of public deposits, misappropriation of resources, and bribery.
In addition to the life sentence, Hui has been stripped of his political rights for life and had all personal property confiscated. The court imposed massive fines on corporate entities, with China Evergrande Group and its subsidiary, Evergrande Real Estate, being fined a combined total of approximately 15.82 billion yuan (roughly $2.21 billion to $2.35 billion). Fifty-six other executives also received prison terms ranging from approximately one year and ten months to 18 years.
The legal proceedings conclude a major chapter in the collapse of the conglomerate, which defaulted on approximately $300 billion in debt in 2021. This collapse has triggered a broader real estate crisis in China, leaving hundreds of thousands of unfinished housing units across more than 100 cities and causing significant financial strain for homebuyers.
