China expands brain-computer interface use for clinical applications
China is expanding the use of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) from laboratory settings to clinical and industrial applications in Shanghai. This technology, which enables direct communication between the brain and external equipment via neural signals, has been designated as a priority in the government’s 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030.
In the Minhang district, the Brain Intelligence Valley serves as a national hub, hosting over 50 companies. Notable developments include Neuracle Technology (Xangai) Co., Ltd., which has developed the world’s first approved invasive BCI medical device for commercial use. This system aims to compensate for hand motor functions using electrodes implanted between the skull and the dura mater. Health insurance authorities are currently working on product coding to facilitate patient coverage.
Additionally, MingShi Brain Computer Technology is conducting clinical studies on vision reconstruction for blind patients. By using surgically implanted electrodes to stimulate the visual cortex, the system has demonstrated the ability to provide partial visual recovery. This development addresses a significant global need, as there are approximately 9 million blind individuals in China and over 43 million worldwide.
