China expands East African economic ties through trade and technology

China is expanding its economic footprint in East Africa by shifting its focus from traditional infrastructure projects toward trade, manufacturing, technology, and finance. This strategic pivot aims to capture a larger share of the region's growing consumer and investment markets.

In Somalia, more than 30 Chinese companies recently participated in a business forum in Mogadishu to discuss investments in agriculture, fisheries, energy, and communications. This engagement follows a broader trend of deepening ties between China and nations like Kenya, leveraging strategic Indian Ocean positions.

In China's Jiangsu province, officials highlighted a model of cooperation centered on technical skills and production. Examples include textile operations in Ethiopia that combine African labor and cotton with Chinese management, and efforts to establish local vaccine production lines in Zimbabwe. Trade between Wuxi and Africa rose by over 40 percent in the first half of 2026, signaling the rapid growth of these emerging markets.
