China expands health insurance coverage for innovative drugs
China is expanding its national health insurance coverage to include more innovative drugs, specifically targeting treatments for cancer, chronic diseases, rare diseases, and pediatric conditions. The move aims to reduce the financial burden on patients and their families.
Li Tao, deputy director of the National Healthcare Security Administration, reported that since 2018, 949 medicines have been added to the national insurance list, including 199 innovative drugs. The administration also intends to expand coverage through private insurance and encourage private insurers to cover clinically significant drugs not included in basic programs. Additionally, authorities plan to shorten approval times to accelerate the clinical use of new pharmaceutical innovations.
The Chinese biopharmaceutical sector has seen rapid growth. According to McKinsey, China accounted for approximately 30% of the global biopharmaceutical pipeline in 2025, up from 2% a decade prior. Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that the total value of overseas licensing agreements for innovative drugs in China reached a record of over $100 billion in the first half of 2026.
