China expands zero-tariff treatment to 53 African nations

China has extended zero-tariff treatment to products from all 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, effective May 1, 2026. This initiative expands the existing scheme to include 20 additional non-least-developed countries, joining the 33 least-developed nations already benefiting from the arrangement. The new terms for these additional countries are initially set for a two-year period.

While the move offers African exporters improved access to the Chinese market, success remains dependent on product competitiveness, supply chain reliability, and meeting Chinese certification requirements. In South Africa, Chinese automotive manufacturers such as BAIC and Chery have already established or are expanding local production facilities.

Amidst shifting geopolitical tensions, Africa faces challenges including tariff wars and supply chain disruptions. While intra-African trade grew by 5.5 percent to approximately $213.8 billion last year, experts suggest that the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area is essential to securing the continent's economic future and reducing vulnerability to global market volatility.
