Meta forced to unwind $2 billion Manus AI acquisition by China

China has ordered the reversal of Meta’s $2 billion acquisition of the AI startup Manus, citing violations of outbound investment and technology export regulations. The Chinese National Development and Reform Commission reportedly viewed the deal as an attempt to undermine the country’s domestic technology base.

As a result of the unwinding, Manus will return to operating as an independent company. The separation involves significant operational changes, including the deletion of certain user data generated after the acquisition closed in December 2025 to comply with regional regulatory requirements. Meta has already begun isolating Manus staff and tools from its internal systems.

To facilitate the separation, a group of former investors, including Tencent, and the Manus management team are expected to repurchase the company from Meta at the original $2 billion valuation. Meanwhile, Manus co-founder Xiao Hong and chief scientist Ji Yichao remain unable to leave China following a summons by authorities in March regarding the investigation into the sale.
