China hosts National Ecology Day events to advance green development

China held major events for the 2026 National Ecology Day, focusing on green development and the transition toward carbon peak and neutrality goals. The main activities took place in Inner Mongolia and Yantai, Shandong province.

In Inner Mongolia, officials highlighted achievements in ecological security, noting that since the 18th National Congress, energy consumption intensity has decreased by over 26%. The “Three-North” Shelterbelt Forest Program has significantly increased forest and grass coverage. Additionally, the implementation of China’s first Ecological Environment Code began on August 15, aiming to provide a comprehensive legal framework for environmental governance.

In Yantai, the focus shifted to industrial and energy transitions. The city is developing four major clean energy bases involving nuclear, wind, solar, and LNG. Yantai is also advancing its status as a national-level zero-carbon industrial zone. Technological innovations were showcased, including “Huanbao,” an AI-driven large model designed to assist with carbon emission accounting and dual-carbon public services.

Looking toward the upcoming “15th Five-Year Plan” period, China aims to deepen green industrialization and strengthen ecological security barriers through systematic planning and international cooperation.
