Philippines protests Chinese floating platform on Scarborough Shoal

The Philippine government lodged a formal diplomatic protest after its military and coast guard identified a six‑metre‑by‑six‑metre floating platform, described as an antenna, on the disputed Scarborough Shoal (known as Panatag Shoal in the Philippines and Huangyan Island in China). Philippine officials said the structure, which had personnel on board, was an illegal presence in an area the Philippines claims as its maritime domain.

China's foreign ministry rejected the protest, asserting indisputable sovereignty over the shoal and describing the activity as legitimate scientific research. Beijing urged Manila to cease what it called maritime infringements and provocations. The incident adds to longstanding tensions in the South China Sea, where a 2016 arbitration rulings rejected China's expansive claims, and where China has previously turned small installations into militarised artificial islands. Philippine Armed Forces chief Gen. Romeo Brawner warned that the Philippines will not allow a similar transformation at Scarborough Shoal.

Other claimant states—including Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan—also monitor the situation, while the United States has reminded that it is obligated to defend its treaty ally, the Philippines, should hostilities arise.
