China installs world's largest offshore wind converter station

Beijing announced the installation of the world’s largest offshore wind converter station, dubbed “Heart of Offshore Wind”, 100 km off the coast of Yangjiang in Guangdong province. The 500‑kilovolt, 2‑gigawatt facility, built by China Three Gorges Corporation, will collect electricity from 163 offshore turbines, convert 66 kV AC to 500 kV DC and feed the grid with an estimated six terawatt‑hours of clean power each year.

The station, weighing about 25,000 tonnes and covering an area comparable to a football field, entered the final phase of submarine‑cable linking and joint testing with on‑shore installations. It is a key component of the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macau Greater Bay Area plan, aimed at delivering reliable renewable energy to a region home to over 80 million people.
