China Issues Heatwave Health Guidance to Prevent Dehydration and Heatstroke

A prolonged 40‑day “Sanfu” heatwave is sweeping parts of China, with temperatures reaching levels that can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Health officials warn that vulnerable groups—including the elderly, children, outdoor workers and pregnant women—should limit exposure during the peak UV hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., stay in well‑ventilated indoor spaces, and keep ambient temperatures no lower than 26 °C when using air‑conditioning.

Nutrition experts recommend increasing fluid intake and consuming high‑water‑content foods such as cucumber (about 96 % water), tomatoes, grapes and watermelon. Natural sources of electrolytes like coconut water, avocado and bananas are advised over processed sports drinks. Light, low‑fat meals and frequent small portions help reduce metabolic heat. Physical activity should be low‑intensity and scheduled for early morning or evening, while heavy exercise, oily or sugary foods are discouraged. These measures aim to mitigate the health risks posed by the extreme heat.
