China 2026 summer heatwave
Overview
In early July 2026, China faced an unprecedented heatwave, with the National Meteorological Center warning of nine‑day periods of 41 °C‑44 °C across north‑western regions and temperatures above 39 °C in the Huang‑Huai area and the Yangtze River Delta. Record surface temperatures of 84 °C were recorded in Xinjiang's Turpan basin, and rapid snowmelt in the Kunlun Mountains triggered flash floods in Qiemo County.
By mid‑July the heat intensified into a 40‑day “Three Fu” spell, sustaining temperatures above 37 °C in more than 20 provinces, with peaks over 40 °C. The extreme conditions disrupted daily life: food deliveries spoiled, live shrimp were unintentionally cooked after brief exposures, and cement road surfaces expanded and cracked, nearly causing a vehicle accident. The episode also highlighted traditional customs associated with the “Three Fu” period.
By late July, health authorities issued nationwide guidance to prevent dehydration and heatstroke as the prolonged “Sanfu” heatwave continued. Officials urged the elderly, children, outdoor workers and pregnant women to limit exposure during peak UV hours (10 a.m.–5 p.m.), stay in well‑ventilated indoor spaces and keep indoor temperatures at least 26 °C when using air‑conditioning. Nutrition experts recommended high‑water foods such as cucumber, tomatoes, grapes and watermelon, and natural electrolyte sources like coconut water, avocado and bananas, while advising against heavy exercise, oily or sugary meals. The measures aim to mitigate health risks as the extreme heat persists across the country.
