China launches multi-functional AI-capable satellite

Chinese researchers are advancing satellite technology by transitioning from single-service platforms to multi-functional systems that integrate communication, sensing, computing, and intelligent processing. A recent launch from the Dongfeng commercial space innovation pilot zone carried nine satellites, including PEGA-SUS1 (also referred to as Supercomputing-1 or S-AIDC-1).

Developed through a collaboration involving Pengcheng Laboratory, GalaxySpace, and other institutions, PEGA-SUS1 is the first in the PCL-Pegasus Constellation. This platform is designed to verify an integrated “communication-sensing-intelligence-computing” system. The satellite features advanced payloads for non-terrestrial networks, microwave communications, and satellite-ground laser links.

A key innovation is the use of on-orbit AI to process remote sensing data. Rather than downloading massive amounts of raw imagery to Earth for analysis, the satellite can identify objects and analyze data—such as detecting fires or estimating affected areas—directly in orbit. This capability aims to reduce downlink bandwidth requirements and decrease response times from hours to minutes.
