China orbital AI and space computing development
Overview
China is advancing its orbital computing and satellite capabilities through the deployment of multi-functional, AI-capable systems. A recent launch from the Dongfeng commercial space innovation pilot zone included the PEGA-SUS1 satellite, also known as ‘Supercomputing-1’. This satellite is the first in the PCL-Pegasus Constellation and is designed to verify an integrated ‘communication-sensing-intelligence-computing’ system.
These technological advancements focus on using on-orbit AI to process remote sensing data directly in space. By performing tasks such as object identification and fire detection in orbit, the systems aim to reduce downlink bandwidth requirements and decrease response times from hours to minutes. This development is part of a broader effort to establish a distributed space computing network, utilizing projects like the ‘Peng Cheng Nanke-1’ and the ‘Three-Body Computing Constellation’ to create scalable, networked orbital data centers.
