China marks 50th anniversary of Mao Zedong's death

Thousands of people gathered in China on September 9 to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China. Significant crowds assembled in Shaoshan, his birthplace in Hunan province, and at the Mao Zedong Mausoleum in Beijing.

In Shaoshan, visitors placed floral wreaths, portraits, and other offerings before a large bronze statue of Mao. In Beijing, the high volume of visitors led authorities to extend the operating hours of the mausoleum to accommodate the crowds. Reservations for the commemorative period were reported to have sold out in advance.

Despite the large public turnout, no official state ceremonies were held. Since 1996, regulations established by the Communist Party of China have dictated that the government does not conduct major state ceremonies for the death anniversaries of former leaders. The commemorations highlighted the enduring symbolic weight of Mao's legacy in the country's political memory.
