Mao Zedong legacy and 50th anniversary reflections
Overview
As the 50th anniversary of Mao Zedong’s death on September 9, 2026, passed, his complex legacy continues to shape Chinese politics and social sentiment. While the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) maintains his status as a revolutionary hero—visible in monuments like Tiananmen Square and on national currency—it has historically acknowledged the Cultural Revolution as a ‘grave mistake.’
On the anniversary, thousands of people gathered to pay respects, with significant crowds assembling in Shaoshan, his birthplace in Hunan province, and at the Mao Zedong Mausoleum in Beijing. In Shaoshan, visitors placed floral wreaths and portraits before a large bronze statue, while high visitor volumes in Beijing led authorities to extend the mausoleum’s operating hours. Reservations for the commemorative period reportedly sold out in advance.
Despite this large public turnout, no official state ceremonies were held. Since 1996, CPC regulations have dictated that the government does not conduct major state ceremonies for the death anniversaries of former leaders, reserving major commemorations for births instead.
Political analysts note a tension between historical lessons and current governance. While Mao’s era of extreme power concentration led to reforms under Deng Xiaoping, observers suggest that under Xi Jinping, there is a trend toward the centralization of power that mirrors some systemic issues from the Mao era.
Reflections also highlight a growing generational divide. Driven by economic uncertainty, high youth unemployment, and social pressures, many young people are increasingly turning to Mao’s writings for guidance. On social media and in universities, his works are seeing a resurgence in popularity, with some viewing him as a ‘teacher’ and a symbol of resilience and class struggle.
