China naval and coast guard vessels transit near Japan
A significant deployment of Chinese naval and coast guard vessels has been detected near Japan, including the aircraft carrier Liaoning and advanced 055-type destroyers. According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, at least 17 Chinese vessels have been spotted in the region over recent weeks, with four ships passing through the Osumi Strait toward the Pacific on October 27. Notably, the accompanying coast guard vessel was observed to be equipped with a machine gun, raising concerns regarding the militarization of China's maritime law enforcement.
In response to these maneuvers, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi held bilateral talks during the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting in the Philippines. The two nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening deterrence against China, specifically focusing on the First Island Chain. The discussions emphasized 'denial capability'—a strategy aimed at preventing an adversary from achieving military objectives even if an attack is launched.
To bolster this defense posture, the U.S. and Japan are pursuing increased cooperation in ammunition production and the establishment of missile assembly facilities within Japan. Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high as the Philippines and Taiwan monitor the movements of the Liaoning carrier group, which has been conducting exercises in the West Pacific.
