China-Japan maritime security tensions
Overview
Tensions have escalated following the passage of the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning and a naval group near Okinawa and the Osumi Strait. The Liaoning group, which included three missile destroyers, conducted flight operations near Ishigaki within Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone. In response, the Japanese government identified the need to strengthen surveillance and information gathering as an “urgent task.”
Subsequent monitoring by the Japanese Ministry of Defense detected at least 17 Chinese naval and coast guard vessels in the region. Concerns were raised regarding the militarization of maritime law enforcement after a coast guard vessel was observed equipped with a machine gun.
In response to these maneuvers, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi held bilateral talks to reaffirm commitments to strengthening deterrence, specifically focusing on the First Island Chain. The two nations are pursuing increased cooperation in ammunition production and missile assembly facilities to bolster their defense posture.
