China-Philippines clashes intensify South China Sea dispute

Chinese coast guard vessels have repeatedly confronted Philippine naval forces at the Second Thomas Shoal and Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. On June 20, Chinese boats approached a Philippine warship and reportedly struck sailors with wooden clubs, prompting Manila to lodge a protest. China insists its patrols were routine and that Filipino vessels approached dangerously first.

At the same time, Beijing has stepped up patrols and training exercises around Taiwan, demanding detailed voyage information from hundreds of ships in the eastern Taiwan Strait. Taiwanese media say Chinese forces are preparing to block maritime supply routes in a conflict scenario. Analysts note that the South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait and the nearby Bashi Channel form a strategic “integrated front” linking Chinese territorial ambitions to Taiwan reunification plans, while the United States views the same area as a critical arena for countering Chinese influence.

The disputed waterways carry roughly 40% of global trade and 60% of oil and gas shipments, making any escalation a potential threat to international shipping and regional security.
