Philippines, US and Japan conduct joint South China Sea drills amid China tensions
The Philippines, the United States and Japan carried out a five‑day multilateral maritime exercise in the South China Sea from July 21 to July 25. Naval warships, coast‑guard vessels, surveillance aircraft and fighter jets were deployed to improve interoperability and to demonstrate a shared commitment to peace, stability and security in the Indo‑Pacific region.
The drills took place against a backdrop of escalating confrontations with China. Chinese Coast Guard personnel were reported to have fired water cannons at Philippine vessels near Scarborough Shoal on consecutive days, and earlier had struck a Filipino sailor with a baton at Second Thomas Shoal. China’s People’s Liberation Army condemned the joint exercises as damaging regional peace. Philippine armed‑forces chief Gen. Antonio Nafarrete visited the Philippine‑held Thitu Island in the Spratly chain during the drills, pledging continued support. China continues to reject the 2016 international arbitration ruling that dismissed its expansive claims in the South China Sea.
