China's Asteroid Deflection Mission Targets 2015 XF261
China's National Space Administration (CNSA) plans to launch a planetary‑defense mission before 2030 to test kinetic impact deflection of the near‑Earth asteroid 2015 XF261, an object roughly 16–30 m in diameter that poses no immediate threat. The mission, scheduled for launch in 2027, will carry two spacecraft on a single rocket: an impactor that will strike the asteroid at more than 9 km s⁻¹ and an observer that will monitor the collision and measure any change in the object's orbit. The impact speed is substantially higher than the 6.1 km s⁻¹ used by NASA's DART mission in 2022. If successful, China would become the second nation, after the United States, to demonstrate a kinetic‑impact technique that can directly alter an asteroid’s trajectory around the Sun. The project is led by planetary‑defense scientist Li Mingtao, who heads CNSA’s planetary‑defense program.
