Overview
The United Nations formalised 30 June 2026 as International Asteroid Day, recalling the 1908 Tunguska event and urging global awareness of near‑Earth object (NEO) hazards. By mid‑2026, between 16 000 and 36 000 NEOs are catalogued, with monitoring programmes tracking thousands of asteroids and comets, including long‑term targets such as 1950 DA, Bennu, 2008 JL3 and 2010 RF12.
Planetary‑defence efforts continue to advance. NASA’s 2022 DART mission demonstrated a kinetic‑impact deflection of Dimorphos, while ESA’s Hera spacecraft, launched in 2024, will reach the Didymos system later in 2026 to study the impact crater and asteroid bulk properties. ESA’s “Ramses” mission will observe Apophis during its 13 April 2029 close approach, and both agencies are developing infrared surveys, ion‑thruster concepts and fragmentation‑risk assessments.
China’s CNSA is finalising a kinetic‑impact test on the ~30‑m asteroid 2015 XF261. The mission will launch two spacecraft – an impactor striking at ~9 km s⁻¹ and an observer recording pre‑, during‑ and post‑impact data – to evaluate orbit alteration, controlled fragmentation and interior‑structure characterisation.
NASA is preparing the CAPSTONE 02 lunar navigation test for 2027. Two identical 400‑kg satellites, built by Terran Orbital Systems under contract to Advanced Space, will demonstrate autonomous cislunar navigation, formation‑flight, and ground‑station‑independent communications using onboard optical sensors and celestial‑reference software, extending the capabilities proved by the original CAPSTONE halo‑orbit mission.
