China-Philippines South China Sea clash escalates in July 2024

On 20 July 2024 a violent encounter occurred at the Ayungin (Ren’ai) Shoal in the South China Sea. Filipino sailors reported being struck with a wooden bat by Chinese Coast Guard personnel, while China accused the Philippines of deliberately colliding with its patrol boat and provoking the incident.

Philippine Foreign Minister Maria Theresa Lazaro lodged a formal protest with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila, demanding an end to what she called unacceptable actions. Wang Yi responded with a strong protest, meeting Lazaro during an ASEAN foreign ministers’ gathering and accusing Filipino military and police elements of “intentional provocation” backed by external forces. Both sides recalled their ambassadors in a rare diplomatic escalation.

China’s ambassador in Manila, Ching Chuen, and the Chinese Coast Guard also issued statements condemning the Philippines for provocative activities, including an intrusion by Filipino vessels into the disputed Huangyan Island waters on 23 July. The United States and Australia publicly condemned China’s actions, adding further international pressure.

The episode underscores the heightened tension over overlapping claims in the South China Sea and the risk of further diplomatic or maritime confrontations.
