China protests UK sanctions on Chinese firms tied to Russia war supply chain

The United Kingdom announced restrictive measures on 70 entities and individuals on 16 June 2026, targeting firms accused of facilitating Russia's military efforts. Among those listed were four Chinese companies alleged to provide dual‑use equipment for the Russian war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the sanctions aim to disrupt a "shadow fleet" and financial networks supporting Moscow's war economy.

Beijing responded by lodging formal diplomatic representations, describing the measures as unilateral and without basis in international law. The Chinese embassy in London warned it would take necessary steps to protect the lawful rights and interests of the affected Chinese businesses and urged the UK to lift the sanctions immediately.

The dispute highlights escalating tensions between London and Beijing over supply‑chain security and the broader Western effort to curb material support for Russia.
