China provides climate monitoring and forecasting to Nepal

Following a severe landslide at the Kyirong-Rasuwagadhi port on the China-Nepal border, China’s National Climate Center has initiated an emergency response to support relief efforts in Nepal.

Under the direction of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the center is providing climate monitoring and forecasting products via the Nepal Cloud customized version of the ‘Maju’ smart weather forecasting program. Monitoring services include daily data on temperature, precipitation, and soil drought conditions, alongside ten types of climate index products such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO).

For forecasting, the center is utilizing the ‘Fengshun’ AI-based climate model to provide Nepal with 60-day daily temperature and precipitation forecasts. Additionally, the National Climate Center is acting as the ‘Third Pole’ regional climate center to provide regular extended climate trend forecasts for 15 to 30 days to assist ongoing relief operations.
