China-Nepal landslide meteorological assistance

Overview

Following a severe landslide at the border between China and Nepal, specifically near the Changling-Rasua and Kyirong-Rasuwagadhi locations, China has activated emergency meteorological assistance mechanisms to support relief efforts.

Initial responses focused on disaster monitoring using Fengyun meteorological satellites. The China Meteorological Administration utilized the “Maju” intelligent early warning system to provide multi-source data, including cloud imagery, convection data, rainfall estimates, and lightning monitoring via the Fengyun-4B, Fengyun-4C, and Fengyun-3G satellites.

As the response progressed, the scope of assistance expanded to include comprehensive climate monitoring and long-term forecasting. The National Climate Center began providing daily data on temperature, precipitation, and soil drought conditions, alongside climate index products such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Furthermore, the ‘Fengshun’ AI-based climate model was deployed to provide 60-day daily temperature and precipitation forecasts, while the center also provided extended climate trend forecasts of 15 to 30 days to assist ongoing operations.
