China Railway Summer Transport Hits 4.32 Billion Passengers

By July 31, the two‑month summer railway travel period in China had moved more than 4.32 billion passengers, marking the halfway point of the 62‑day schedule. The surge was driven by student trips, tourism, and family visits, with the national rail network adding capacity through extra trains, double‑heading high‑speed sets, and attaching additional cars to conventional services.

In Chongqing, the main stations dispatched a combined 702,600 travelers, averaging 22,700 passengers per day. Chongqing East Station alone handled 399,000 passengers, a 31 % increase year‑on‑year, while student travel rose 40.6 % to 68,000. The railway authorities responded with 1,626 extra trains to popular destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, and introduced special services for study‑tour groups, fans and vulnerable travelers.

New high‑speed sections and stations opened during the period, including the Wuhan‑Xi’an high‑speed segment, Beijing‑suburban line, and stations like Xi’an East and Foshan, further tightening the network and boosting overall transport capacity.
