China ramps up flood response as extreme rains hit northern and southern regions

The Ministry of Water Resources has kept a level‑IV emergency response in place for the provinces of Guangxi, Hubei and Hunan as heavy rainstorms continue across much of the country. Over the 24‑hour period from July 19‑20, intense rain fell in Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shanghai, prompting targeted warnings for eight provinces and alerts for river basins, reservoirs and landslide‑prone areas.

Experts say northern China will see 20%‑50% more rainfall than usual during the peak flood season from mid‑July to mid‑August, raising the risk of flash floods, urban water‑logging and landslides. A recent landslide in Pengshui County, Chongqing, killed eight people and left rescuers searching for up to 34 missing. Officials cite climate change as a driving factor and call for stronger adaptation measures as the country confronts the most severe flood conditions of the season.
