China rare earth magnet exports to US drop ahead of Xi-Trump summit

Chinese exports of rare earth magnets to the United States fell by 21 percent in August, dropping to 512 tonnes from July levels. This decline occurs ahead of a scheduled meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., where discussions regarding trade and artificial intelligence are expected.

China maintains significant control over the refining and magnet manufacturing stages of the rare earth supply chain. These components are essential for various industries, including electric motors, defense systems, wind turbines, and consumer goods. The current supply fluctuations highlight Beijing’s leverage in trade negotiations, as the US seeks to secure critical inputs for its technological and military sectors.

Industry observers note that while Washington requires stability to maintain the flow of these materials, periods of increased access to lower-cost Chinese supplies may reduce the urgency for the US to diversify its supply chains. The upcoming talks come as a US-China trade truce, which includes commitments from Beijing to maintain critical mineral flows through export licenses, approaches its expiration in November.
