China reveals massive WZ-X stealth drone via satellite imagery

Satellite and ground-level imagery have revealed a previously unknown Chinese stealth unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) known as the WZ-X. Nicknamed the ‘Malan Monster’, the aircraft features a unique ‘flying wing’ design with a 52-meter wingspan, making it one of the largest drones observed in the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) fleet.

The WZ-X utilizes a distinctive stepped wing shape, transitioning from a wide center to very narrow wingtips to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag during long-duration flights. Analysts estimate the drone is capable of operating at altitudes exceeding 20km with a range of over 19,000km. Its design allows it to remain in thin atmospheric layers, potentially making it immune to most medium-range air defense systems.

Testing is reportedly taking place at the secret Malan base in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Satellite images from March 2026 also identified another large stealth UAV, the GJ-X, suggesting an acceleration in China's high-altitude, long-endurance reconnaissance and surveillance programs.
