Chinese military aviation expansion in Xinjiang

Satellite imagery and aviation research indicate that China is rapidly expanding military flight-test facilities in the Xinjiang region to accelerate the testing of next-generation aircraft. Developments include significant infrastructure expansion at a facility near Lop Nur, featuring new hangars, taxiways, and fuel-storage infrastructure, which experts suggest may become a central hub for testing high-end aircraft such as the suspected sixth-generation J-36 fighter.

Recent imagery has also revealed a previously unknown stealth unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) known as the WZ-X, nicknamed the ‘Malan Monster’. This large, high-altitude intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) drone features a twin-engined ‘flying wing’ design with an estimated 52-meter wingspan. Analysts estimate the WZ-X can operate at altitudes exceeding 20km with a range of over 19,000km, potentially allowing it to remain in thin atmospheric layers to avoid medium-range air defense systems. Testing for the WZ-X is reportedly linked to the Malan Air Base, a primary test center for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).
