China has held direct talks with Yemen’s Houthi movement to obtain individual clearances for its oil tankers to transit the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, the southern gateway of the Red Sea. The Houthis announced a maritime blockade on 20 July, targeting ships that load or discharge cargo at Saudi ports. Since the blockade, at least four super‑tankers carrying Saudi crude to China have passed the strait after each vessel received approval from the Houthis, with Iran informed of the arrangements. The deal lets Chinese‑flagged ships avoid rerouting around Africa and helps keep China’s oil imports stable despite regional disruptions that have pushed world oil prices above $100 a barrel. China, the world’s largest buyer of Saudi oil, is seeking to maintain the flow from the Yanbu terminal while other tankers have altered course because of safety concerns.
