China economic data shows slowing industrial growth and weak retail sales

China's July economic data reveals a widening gap between resilient industrial production and weakening domestic demand. Industrial output grew by 4.5% year-on-year, a deceleration from the 5.3% recorded in June and below analyst expectations.

Retail sales growth slowed to 0.6%, missing forecasts of 1.5% and falling from 1.0% in June. This stagnation in consumption highlights the ongoing struggle to stimulate household spending despite government trade-in subsidies.

Investment figures also showed significant weakness. Fixed-asset investment contracted by 6.7% year-to-date, exceeding the expected 6.2% decline. Notably, real estate development investment plummeted by 19.2%, underscoring the persistent crisis in the property sector.

Additionally, the urban unemployment rate rose to 5.2% in July. These indicators collectively suggest a cooling economy, potentially increasing pressure on the People's Bank of China to implement further monetary easing to support growth.
