China shifts West Philippine Sea presence toward coast guard

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reports a shift in China's maritime presence in the West Philippine Sea. During the first half of 2026, the Philippine Navy observed an increase in China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels, with 77 different ships monitored compared to 68 during the same period last year. Conversely, the number of Chinese navy vessels monitored decreased from 100 to 78, and maritime militia vessels dropped from 999 to 850.

In addition to the rise in coast guard activity, the AFP noted an increase in Chinese research and survey vessels, recording 44 different ships compared to 33 in the previous year. Some of these vessels exhibited erratic tracks, suggesting survey activities in areas including the Bashi Channel, Balintang Channel, and Benham Rise.

While some geopolitical analysts express concern regarding potential maritime “tolls” or restrictions on navigation, others argue that Beijing's current activities are focused on maritime law enforcement, fishing access disputes, and hydrocarbon exploration rather than commercial transit tolls.
