China targets 1.6 million new‑energy heavy trucks by 2030

A joint plan issued by 11 ministries, including the Ministry of Transport, the NDRC and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, sets out China’s roadmap for scaling up new‑energy heavy trucks. The plan aims for a 40% market penetration by 2030, with the fleet reaching over 1.6 million units and accounting for about 20% of heavy‑truck traffic.

Key measures include building roughly 3,000 charging and swapping stations, linking them to major highway corridors to create zero‑carbon transport routes, and integrating hydrogen‑fuel and green‑fuel stations where needed. Infrastructure development will follow the national “6‑axis‑7‑corridor‑8‑channel” road network, focusing on high‑traffic freight corridors such as the Beijing‑Hebei‑Tianjin region, the Yangtze River Delta and the Greater Bay Area. The plan also calls for upgrading existing service areas with charging facilities, coordinating with renewable energy projects, and encouraging the retirement of old diesel trucks in favor of new‑energy models.
