Heavy-Duty Transport Decarbonisation – Global Updates
Overview
By mid-2026, the transition to clean heavy-duty transport is gaining momentum, though diesel remains dominant with a 92% market share. In the first half of 2026, electric trucks accounted for 4.8% of new EU truck registrations, though some data sets suggest the market share may be as low as 0.3%.
In Belgium, heavy electric truck registrations rose to 91 vehicles compared to 75 the previous year, despite a decline in medium-weight electric volumes. The transition is supported by financial incentives, including a 40% investment deduction for emission-free freight and an 80% reduction in certain kilometer charges. However, structural barriers persist, such as the high average age of the EU truck fleet—approximately 14 to 20 years—and the economic difficulty of long charging stops for vehicles under tight schedules. Regional disparities in infrastructure between Western and Central/Eastern Europe also impact progress.
In Germany, logistics group Fiege expanded its battery-electric fleet to 25 vehicles following the delivery of five Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks. These units utilize three LFP battery packs totaling approximately 621 kWh to provide a 500 km range. Fiege aims to reach 30 fast-charge points in Germany by year-end. Concurrently, Mercedes-Benz Trucks is testing the eArocs 400, a 612 hp battery-electric construction truck designed for urban, low-noise work, though its higher curb weight presents payload challenges.
Alternative fuels like hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) and bioLNG are emerging as transitional solutions, though they face limitations regarding raw material and biomass availability.
