China targets 70% NEV passenger vehicle market share by 2030
China has unveiled its 15th Five-Year Plan for the development of intelligent and connected New Energy Vehicle (NEV) industries, outlining ambitious targets for 2030. The plan, released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, aims for NEVs to constitute 70% of new passenger vehicle sales and 40% of new commercial vehicle sales by the end of the decade.
The strategic focus is shifting from simple electrification to 'intelligentization.' This includes the large-scale implementation of Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving, the integration of AI for energy management and motion control, and the development of advanced technologies such as solid-state batteries. The government also aims to foster multiple global top 10 automakers and top 100 component suppliers.
To ensure industry health, the plan includes measures to monitor production capacity, eliminate inefficient capacity, and curb illegal subsidies or unfair competition. Additionally, the policy supports the globalization of Chinese manufacturers by assisting with overseas parts warehouses and cross-border payment systems. This shift has international implications, particularly in markets like Brazil, where Chinese manufacturers like BYD and Great Wall Motor hold significant market shares in the electrified vehicle segment.
