China has unveiled a five-year industry development plan aiming to establish the nation as a global leader in the automotive sector by 2030. The strategy focuses heavily on intelligent, connected, and new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Key targets for 2030 include NEVs accounting for 70 percent of new passenger vehicle sales and 40 percent of new commercial vehicle sales in the domestic market. The plan also emphasizes the expansion of autonomous driving technologies, with high-level automation expected on expressways and urban roads.

Efficiency goals include reducing average passenger vehicle fuel consumption to 3.3 liters per 100 km and pure electric vehicle electricity consumption to approximately 11.5 kWh per 100 km. Additionally, the government aims to increase labor productivity by 15 percent from 2025 levels and foster several automakers that rank among the world's top 10 by sales.

Recent data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows significant momentum, with NEV sales reaching 60.6 percent of all new car sales in August. During that month, NEV production and sales both exceeded 1.6 million units, representing a nearly 20 percent increase year-on-year.
