China to explore AI applications in financial regulation and services
China is planning to investigate and expand the use of artificial intelligence within its financial regulatory and service sectors. According to a report presented to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the country aims to leverage AI to strengthen supervision and improve financial support for the real economy.
The initiative builds upon existing frameworks, such as the June 2026 guidelines from the National Financial Regulatory Administration (NFRA) regarding AI in the banking and insurance industries. These rules emphasize governance protocols, data handling, risk management, and the necessity of human oversight for high-risk functions like credit approval or fund transfers.
Beyond AI integration, the government's financial development priorities include maintaining accommodative monetary policy, suppressing illegal financial activities, and protecting consumers. Other objectives involve supporting technological innovation, infrastructure, and small businesses, while expanding the international use of the yuan and developing an independent cross-border payment system.
