China warns Nepal of potential flood from rising glacier lake
China has issued an urgent warning to Nepal regarding a temporary lake formed by landslide debris and glacier melt near the China-Nepal-Tibet border. The lake, located near the confluence of the Chochen and Purapu rivers, has accumulated approximately 2.5 million cubic meters of water.
Chinese authorities noted that the water in the lake is turning a darker color, which may indicate that the natural dam is weakening and could burst at any time. Modeling suggests that if the dam fails, the water flow in the river system could reach a maximum of 500 cubic meters per second. While some water has already begun flowing into the Trishuli River, officials remain on high alert.
The warning comes as Nepal struggles with the aftermath of recent devastating flash floods, which have caused hundreds of deaths and left thousands missing. In China's Gyirong County, authorities have already evacuated nearly 500 villagers and over 500 tourists to prevent casualties.
