Indonesia and Germany deepen Indo‑Pacific cooperation on energy, trade and maritime security

Indonesia and Germany have expanded their strategic partnership to promote a third‑path Indo‑Pacific model built on inclusivity, multilateralism and respect for international law. Following German President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier’s state visit in June 2026, the two nations agreed to cooperate on the energy transition, green economic transformation and vocational education, while also enhancing maritime law‑enforcement capabilities and shipping safety.

The partnership aligns Indonesia’s Indo‑Pacific Outlook – emphasizing dialogue, UNCLOS adherence and cooperation in maritime affairs, connectivity, the SDGs and the economy – with Germany’s 2020 policy guidelines that prioritize the region for European foreign policy. By coordinating in multilateral forums such as the UN, G20 and WTO, the duo seeks to offer a collaborative alternative to great‑power competition between the United States and China.
